Chattanooga known as the scenic city of the south is located on the banks of the beautiful Tennessee River. The city has received national recognition for the renaissance of its beautiful downtown and redevelopment of its riverfront. Today the water front is home to many area attractions including the Tennessee Riverpark, the Tennessee Aquarium, the Walnut Street Bridge, and Coolidge Park. With the development along the Tennessee River has come a strong downtown housing market. There are a number of expensive townhouses and condos being build with some units near the Tennessee River priced at and above $1 million.
Chattanooga Recreation
With its scenic beauty, moderate climate, and proximity to a host of attractions Chattanooga has something for everyone. Walking trails along the river offer great exercise with many varies of plant life or you can stop at one of several fishing priers. Located in the Riverpark off Amnicola Highway is an easy to use ramp for boaters. The moderate climate makes Chattanooga a boater's paradise with boaters hitting the water in April and winding up the season with the fall color cruise in October. With the revitalizing of downtown Chattanooga one can find restaurants from gourmet to burgers. After dinner you can take in a show, visit one of the many specialty shops or just enjoy a walk downtown to see the many sights.
Chattanooga Top Employers
The city is home to many large companies with its proximity to major Interstate highways and the Tennessee River for barge traffic. Some of the top employers in the area are Erlanger Hospital, Memorial Hospital, Astec Industries, US Pipe and Foundry, Olan Mills, Tennessee Valley Authority, Bi-Lo Incorporated, Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Tennessee, Chattem Inc. and The Krystal Company.
Chattanooga Schools
In 1997 the Chattanooga City School System merged with the Hamilton County School System, before the merger the city system served a predominantly minority student population while the county district served a primarily non-minority student population. After the merger magnet schools, where the curriculum is built around a focused theme, began to gain in popularity. Magnet schools took on a new role as they attracted students living in suburban areas to schools in the central city and therefore helped reduce racial isolation in the larger, geographically segregated district.
Today the school systems in Chattanooga and outlaying areas of Hamilton County have made great progress with improved test scores on state standardized tests for the 8th consecutive year. Fourteen schools scored straight As in Academic Achievement with seven of those also gaining top scores in one-year academic growth grades. Three Hamilton County elementary and three high schools and one K-8 school have been honored as National Schools of Excellence. Click here for more information and a list of all Chattanooga schools.
